Four crews from the club raced in The Carrow Cup in Norwich on Sat 15 December. The Beccles rowers enjoyed racing over the 3000mtr course that started at Pulls Ferry in the city centre.

Jon and James dragged themselves out of retirement to post the best time by a Beccles crew on the day to complete the course in 16m 09s, Liz and Jon managed 17m 28s followed by Nick and Vicky in a time of 17m 52s, the mixed 4+ of Mark B, Rebecca H, Vicky and James with Rebecca B coxing finished the course in 18m 12s, a good effort considering this was the first time this crew had rowed together. All our crews got into the spirit of the event and dressed accordingly. The two slower crews are convinced their lack of pace was due to their festive attire and the boats decoration, however Jon is adamant his costume's fake breasts and fairy wings did nothing to contribute to boat speed.

Even though no prizes were won a good day was had by all and club members will be working towards competing at the Norwich Head in February.

"Well done to those who took part in the Norfolk Long Distance Sculls on 17th November. We had 3 entries:

Lorna & Liz in the Womens Novice double sculls who completed the 2500m course in a time of 11m 46s which put them 4th in their class Vicky and Nick B entered in to the mixed double sculls and came in in a time of 19m 21s over the full 4500m course.

But the best performance came from Ben and Nick in their S4 double scull, winning their event over the full course in 18m 15s (the second time in 2 years that the club has won this category at this event!). This was a great time placing them 7th first division standings. Well done to them for registering BRC's first win of the head race season.

Full results can be found at the following link: http://www.norwichrowingclub.co.uk/ (there's a link to the results down the right hand side of the page).

There is the possibility of crews entering another race in Norwich before the year end - The Carrow Cup - taking place on Saturday 15th December. Details can also be found on the link above. If you're interested in entering speak with Jon or e-mail via the web-site."

Yare Cup on 22nd September was attended by a Mixed 4, Ben and Nick in a S4 double scull, and Alan in his first race in Novice single scull. Rebecca Also competed in a combination crew with Lowestoft RC's Rick Warne. All enjoyed the day and raced well, although there were no honours for Beccles crews. Well done to all those who took part

Phil and Mark A went to London on 6th October to compete in the Pairs Head of the River - a 4km time trial that takes place over approximately half of the boat race course. They came in 11th out of 23 entries and were the 3rd fastest non-London club (local knowledge of the water being very helpful for quick times)

The club enjoyed the fine weather at Cambridge Regatta on Sunday 9th September and celebrated with 2 excellent wins. The Senior 3 double scull of Phil Marler and Mark Adcock achieved their first regatta win in their final having lost out to the eventual winners in the Senior 4 status. Also celebrating was the scratch Mixed Novice coxed four of Mark Taylor, Liz, Anke and Mark Banham. Coxing for the 4 was Rebecca Banham who steered a perfect course to get them across the line well ahead of their competiton (Norwich Union Rowing Club). Well done to all those taking part, including Midge Beedham who raced for the first time in the Junior single scull. Midge came up against a much more experienced competitor so is now looking forward to competing in the head races during the winter.

The next events for the club are Yare Cup (Norwich) on 22nd September, Lowestoft Head (Oulton Broad) on 30th September and Pairs Head (London) 6th October. See link to David Biddulph’s site for more details (http://www.rowing.biddulph.btinternet.co.uk/2007cal.htm)
