For many years the
Beccles Rowing Club committee knew the club was outgrowing its base
at Puddingmoor – just behind the Beccles outdoor swimming pool. The
facilities being so inadequate that the boathouse regularly flooded
leaving the floor a safety inspector’s worst nightmare. Coupled with
the fact that boats needed to be dismantled before and after each
use simply to get them in the boatshed.
Not only that, but
during the height of the summer season the holiday boating traffic
meant that we were occasionally unable to launch boats from the
public pontoon that was available to us. Then there was the security
risk – the boathouse being far to open to theft and vandalism.
However, thanks to
the Foundation for Sports and Arts, Beccles Townlands Trust, Suffolk County Council’s “Youth Capital
Fund” and numerous donations and support from local businesses we
have now acquired the riverside plot formerly used by the Beccles
Canoe Club. Upon the site we have now constructed our brand new
purpose built boatshed.
The site boasts so
many advantages over the previous site:
-
Space to allow us to
store boats safely and securely without the need to remove
riggers
-
The flooding issues
of old are a distant memory due to the raising of the ground
level on the new site
-
A purpose built
pontoon meaning we will not have to take our chances on being
able to get boats out (and back in again!)
-
A club room where
crews will be able to prepare for their session and have a
de-brief afterwards
-
We now have space to
expand!
Of course, this new
shed is the beginning of the latest chapter for our thriving club.
The committee and the club membership
are determined to succeed though and build a solid platform for the
club to progress.
We’re really proud
of our new facilities and welcome new members to join us in a
friendly environment. On the
GALLERY page we’ve gathered some photos of the
construction for you to enjoy! |
